Host Intro: There may be earth-like planets in other parts of the universe, but it is hard to see if they are there, even with the best telescopes. The small amount of light, reflected off planets, is mostly swamped by their parent stars. Dr. Webster Cash is a professor of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences and the Director of the Center for Astrophysics and Space Astronomy at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He's proposed using an old technique of astronomy, an occulter, to increase the chances of finding earth-like planets elsewhere in the universe. Cash's design was selected for a $400,000 funding boost last October by NASA after being selected for initial study in 2004. Dr. Cash spoke with KGNU's Sam Fuqua about his proposal.
