Host Intro: The Boulder area is known for its high concentration of aerospace industry jobs. One of the smaller but very steady contributors to the industry is Ball Aerospace. Ball has been quietly making instruments, control systems, and spacecraft for many well-known NASA projects. They've been in Boulder for fifty years, even longer than NASA itself has existed. They built the instrument that corrected the Hubble space telescope's problem with out of focus images. They also worked on the deep impact project, the mars rovers and orbiter, and are building what will be the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. Bill Townsend is Vice-President of Ball's Civil space systems, their division that works on projects for NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He spoke with How on Earth's Daniel Costello at his office on the Ball Campus in Boulder. He started by talking about the Deep Impact project that was executed last summer.
